World Polio Day is October 24th
As we prepare for World Polio Day on October 24th, here is this week’s wild Polio virus summary, compared to the past two years:
The total number of wild polio cases in 2019 were 176. There were 147 in Pakistan and 29 in Afghanistan.
The total number of wild polio cases in 2020 were 140. There were 84 in Pakistan and 56 in Afghanistan.
The number of wild polio cases for 2021 as of September 22nd, 2021 was 2. There was 1 in Pakistan and 1 in Afghanistan.
“Afghanistan is one of two countries in the world where polio remains endemic. With only one case of wild poliovirus reported so far this year, compared to 56 in 2020, there has never been a better time to eradicate polio. However, the polio programme will struggle to respond if the basic immunization infrastructure begins to collapse around it.” – Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, and Dr Ahmed Al-Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean on their visit to Kabul, Afghanistan.
