This past week, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO is an organization shaped by its 194 members which facilitates global clinical trials, coordinates vaccine development and distribution, and provides funding for disease surveillance programs. The U.S. had been one of the WHO’s largest financial contributors, having provided roughly one-fifth of the WHO’s budget. The decision to withdraw raises concerns about how global health initiatives such as the Global Polio Eradication Initiative will be funded and implemented, particularly in low-income countries which rely on WHO programs for disease control and vaccinations.
