Other Polio news:

  • Most recently reported WPV1 cases this year: March 9th in Afghanistan and May 14th in Pakistan.

  • Over 60,000 polio vaccine refusals reported during April nationwide campaign in Pakistan. The reluctance to vaccinate remains a significant hurdle in Pakistan’s battle against polio. Pakistan has faced vaccine hesitancy and misinformation campaigns which have slowed progress in eradicating the disease. Northern Pakistan has reported its first Polio case in almost seven years, detected in a 23-month-old child. The case was reported after a polio eradication team came under fire from unknown armed men. Since the 1990s, attacks on polio vaccination teams in the country have killed over 200 workers and security personnel.

  • The United States has been included in the World Health Organization’s latest notice regarding a Public Health Emergency of International Concern due to polio detections. A sequencing analysis in 2022 confirmed the presence of poliovirus in a total of 100 positive samples, providing evidence that the unvaccinated individual in Rockland County, New York with paralytic polio contracted the virus through local transmission. The inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV), the only polio vaccine administered in the U.S., protects approximately 99% of individuals who receive all recommended doses.
