September 24th Polio Update

New poliovirus cases and positive environmental isolates this week:

  • Afghanistan: No WPV1 cases and 12 WPV1- positive environmental samples. The number of WPV1 cases in 2025 is four. There were 25 in 2024.
  • Algeria: No cVDPV1 cases, no cVDPV2 cases, no cVDPV1-positive environmental samples, and one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample
  • Angola: No cVDPV1 cases, three cVDPV2 cases, and no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples
  • Nigeria: No cVDPV1 cases, four cVDPV2 cases, and no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples
  • Pakistan: two WPV1 cases and 50 WPV1-positive environmental samples. The number of WPV1 cases in 2025 is 26. There were 74 in 2024.

Senior global health leaders met this week to discuss the final push to eradicate polio in a side event at the 80th United Nations General Assembly.

Picking up some of the loss to the Global Polio Eradication Initiatives’ budget caused by the United States’ withdrawal of its $131 million commitment, Saudi Arabia has made a historic $500 million pledge to the effort.
