Poliovirus cases and positive environmental isolates reported this week:
- Afghanistan: Four WPV1 cases. There have been twenty-three WPV1 cases this year and there were 21 in 2025. The most recent case was on August 2, 2026.
- Democratic Republic of Congo: Eight cVDPV2 cases, no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples, and no cVDPV1 cases
- Mali: One cVDPV2 case
- Nigeria: No cVDPV2 cases, no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples, two cVDPV3 cases, and no cVDPV3-positive environmental samples
- Pakistan: No WPV1 cases and six WPV1-positive environmental samples. There have been three WPV1 cases this year and there were 31 in 2025. The most recent case was on February 10, 2026.
- South Sudan: One cVDPV1 case, no cVDPV1-positive environmental samples, three cVDPV2 cases, and no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples

Last week, African health ministers and high-level representatives reaffirmed commitment to protect decades of investment towards a polio-free continent by adopting a ten-year plan to sustain polio eradication efforts and strengthening their national health systems.
The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on immunization Polio Working Group convened to take stock of progress toward eradication and to examine additional strategy interventions to help accelerate and sustain eradication. Discussions in particular focused on adding a third dose of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) to routine immunization schedules in high-risk countries, and a second dose of fractional IPV for outbreak response in those instances when circulation continues beyond six months, despite multiple vaccination campaigns.
Following a recent meeting, the IHR Emergency Committee published its latest report on the international spread of poliovirus. The effort to eradicate polio remains a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
