Other polio news:

The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization Polio Working Group met last week to evaluate progress toward eradication and examine the decisions moving toward the polio endgame. The group also began formulating recommendations on the role of Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine and Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine in routine immunization.

World Health Organization member states also met and reaffirmed their collective commitment to ending polio, noting last year’s progress with 41 cases of wild polio reported from only 24 districts in Pakistan and Afghanistan, down from 99 cases in 49 districts in 2024.

Despite conflict, humanitarian crisis and funding pressures, WHO’s polio program in the Eastern Mediterranean Region advanced multiple critical areas of eradication:

  • Refining strategies in polio-endemic countries
  • Galvanizing regional support to end polio
  • Creating pathways to children amid complex contexts to stop poliovirus transmission
  • Stepping up political momentum and action for a polio-free Horn of Africa
  • Enhancing laboratory capacity across the Region
  • Joining forces to protect children from polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases
  • Advancing gender equity
