January 21st Polio Update

New poliovirus cases and positive environmental isolates this week:

  • Germany: Two WPV1 positive environmental samples and no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples.
  • Nigeria: Nine cVDPV2 cases, one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample, and five cVDPV3 cases.
  • Pakistan: One WPV1 case and no WPV1-positive environmental samples. There have been no reported cases in 2026 and there were 31 WPV1 cases in 2025. The most recent case reported was on December 14, 2025.

Other polio news:

  • In Nigeria, the five cVDPV3 cases are the first cVDPV3 isolates ever reported from the country and are a new emergence. Large-scale immunization campaigns with bivalent OPV are planned for February and April where 62 cVDPV2 cases were reported in 2025.
  • In a recent episode of “Science in 5”, Dr. Jamal Ahmad, WHO Director for Polio Eradication, explains why polio eradication still matters, how we are to ending this disease forever, and what is at stake if we don’t finish the job.
