January 28th Polio Update

New reports of poliovirus cases and positive environmental isolates this week:

  • Afghanistan: one WPV1 case and five WPV1-positive environmental samples. The most recent case was on October 20, 2025. There were 10 cases in 2025.
  • Algeria: no cVDPV1 cases, no cVDPV1-positive environmental samples, and one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample.
  • Central African Republic: one cVDVP2 case and no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples.
  • Chad: one cVDPV2 case and one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample.
  • Malawi: two cVDPV2-positive environmental samples.
  • Mali: one cVDPV2 case.
  • Namibia: one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample.
  • Pakistan: no WPV1 cases and nine WPV1-positive environmental samples. The most recent case was on December 14, 2025. There were 31 cases in 2025.
  • United Kingdom: one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample

Other polio news:

Next week, global health leaders and ministries of health will convene in Geneva, Switzerland at the WHO Executive Board’s meeting.  Delegates will review the global polio eradication situation.  A new report on polio has been published, providing an overview of progress in implementing and financing the Polio Eradication Strategy, including in the current geopolitical context. It also outlines ongoing planning to secure a lasting polio-free world, such as polio transition efforts.
