May 27th Polio Update

Poliovirus cases and positive environmental isolates reported this week:

  • Afghanistan: One WPV1 case and eleven WPV1-positive environmental samples. There have been four WPV1 cases this year and there were 21 in 2025. The most recent case was on April 2, 2026.
  • Madagascar: One cVDPV1 case, no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples, and no cVDPV3 cases
  • Nigeria: No cVDPV2 cases, no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples, and three cVDPV3 cases
  • Pakistan: No WPV1 cases and no WPV1-positive environmental samples. There have been three WPV1 cases this year and there were 31 in 2025. The most recent case was on February 10, 2026
  • Somalia: Two cVDPV2 cases and three cVDPV2 environmental samples
  • South Sudan: One cVDPV1 case, no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples, and no cVDPV3 cases

As the United States and United Kingdom stop funding Polio eradication, representatives from Rotary and the Japanese government reaffirmed their commitment to achieving global polio eradication at a meeting in April.

World Immunization Week 2026 (April 24–30) centered on the theme “For every generation, vaccines work” and highlighted that immunization has saved over 150 million lives in the past 50 years. Key results included the conclusion of “The Big Catch-Up,” which delivered over 100 million doses to 18.3 million previously unreached or under-vaccinated children.
