Playing at Peace

“That’s what games are, in the end. Teachers. Fun is just another word for learning.” ― Raph Koster

Positive Peace RYLA is an immersive virtual program that takes your district’s RYLA alumni and youth leaders through a massive cooperative video game type experience. The program is entirely online and synchronous (everyone in the program plays at the same time). In the game, participant teams learn the Institute for Economics & Peace eight Pillars of Positive Peace:

  1. Well-functioning Government;
  2. Sound Business Environment;
  3. High Levels of Human Capital;
  4. Acceptance of the Rights of Others;
  5. Free Flow of Information;
  6. Good Relations with Neighbors;
  7. Low Levels of Corruption; and
  8. Equitable Distribution of Resources.

Participating RYLA teams will work together in eight rounds of problem-solving challenges in 12 fictional countries created specifically for the game. Participants rotate through different fictional nations, working together to try to bring the nations to a better, more peaceful state. The experience builds on the skills developed at your district’s RYLA and other leadership programs, and provides them with real-world problem-solving, conflict resolving, and peace-building skills.
