• Afghanistan: Two WPV1 cases and no WPV1-positive environmental samples. There have been twenty-five WPV1 cases this year and there were 21 in 2025. The most recent case was on August 6, 2026.
• Democratic Republic of Congo: Two cVDPV2 cases, no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples, and no cVDPV1 cases
• Mali: One cVDPV2 case
• Nigeria: One cVDPV2 case, no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples, no cVDPV3 cases, and no cVDPV3-positive environmental samples 
• Pakistan: One WPV1 cases and one WPV1-positive environmental sample. There have been four WPV1 cases this year and there were 31 in 2025. The most recent case was on August 7, 2026.
• Somalia: No cVDPV1 cases, no cVDPV1-positive environmental samples, no cVDPV2 cases, and two cVDPV2-positive environmental samples

Only sustained vaccination, surveillance and community engagement will get to the goal line – global elimination.

What happens when vaccines become so successful that we forget the diseases they prevent? As diseases disappear from everyday life, maintaining public awareness, trust and high population immunity becomes even more important. Polio offers a powerful reminder that progress cannot be taken for granted – and that as long as the virus circulates anywhere, our promise remains unfulfilled.
