50 Years of Rotary Youth Exchanges

Since the 1920’s, Rotary clubs and districts have been sponsoring international youth exchanges. But it wasn’t until 1975 that Rotary Youth Exchange was officially recognized as a Rotary activity, growing to an average of 7,500 participants annually. Originally proposed as two programs, one for children of Rotarians, and the other focused on exchanges for vocational purposes. Starting in Europe with vocational exchanges for young people, the idea steadily gained traction, leading to R.I. publishing a pamphlet in the 1960’s with guidelines for international exchanges.

The international student exchange program “as an activity of Rotary International” took effect in January of 1975.  Rotary Youth Exchange continues to be managed by Rotary districts and Rotary clubs

On the new Rotary Young Leaders page on Instagram, Rotary published a celebratory post announcing the anniversary. You can follow the account for more highlights in the coming months related to Rotary Youth Exchange’s 50th anniversary.
