April 15th Polio Update

Poliovirus cases and positive environmental isolates reported this week:

  • AfghanistanTwo WPV1 cases and no WPV1-positive environmental samples. There have been three WPV1 cases this year and there were 21 in 2025. The most recent case was on February 17, 2026.
  • Namibia:  One cVDPV2-positive environmental sample, and no cVDPV3 cases
  • PakistanNo WPV1 cases and one WPV1-positive environmental sample. There has been one WPV1 case this year and there were 31 in 2025. The most recent case was on February 10, 2026.
  • South Sudan:  Two cVDPV1 cases, no cVDPV2 cases and no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples.
  • Sudan: Four cVDPV2 cases and two cVDPV2-positive environmental samples .

Other polio news:

With support from the World Health Organization, Niger recently conducted eight vaccination campaigns and three major catch-up rounds to reach zero-dose and under-vaccinated children. Teams were able to vaccinate an average of 349,961 children per campaign. Two environmental surveillance sites have been established to detect virus circulation in wastewater and 583 surveillance site visits have been conducted to closely monitor the situation.
