April 8th Polio Update

Poliovirus cases and positive environmental isolates reported this week:

  • AfghanistanNo WPV1 cases and 4 WPV1-positive environmental samples. There has been one WPV1 case this year and there were 21 in 2025. The most recent case was on January 15, 2026.
  • Democratic Republic of Congo: No cVDPV1 cases and one cVDPV2 case
  • Nigeria:  No WPV1 cases, three cVDPV2 cases, one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample, and no cVDPV3 cases
  • PakistanNo WPV1 cases and seven WPV1-positive environmental samples. There has been one WPV1 case this year and there were 31 in 2025. The most recent case was on February 10, 2026.
  • Somalia:  No WPV1 cases, one cVDPV2 case and no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples
  • Sudan: No WPV1 cases, no cVDPV2 cases and five cVDPV2-positive environmental samples

Facilities in Australia, Belgium, Hungary, Canada, France and Indonesia were awarded Certificates of Containment by the Global Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication, confirming their full compliance with the WHO Global Action Plan for Poliovirus Containment (GAPIV) and reflecting growing global momentum to ensure poliovirus materials are managed safely and securely.
