August 6th Polio Update

As of the end of July, the total WPV1 cases in 2025 was 13. As of the beginning of June, the total of reported WPV1 positive environmental samples was 275. A total of 67 cVDPV cases have been reported so far this year, 65 of which are cVDPV2 and two are cVDPV3. No cVDPV1 cases have been reported this year.

New poliovirus cases and positive environmental isolates this week:

  • Afghanistan: no WPV-1 cases and four WPV1-positive environmental samples
  • Pakistan: one WPV1 case and no positive environmental samples
  • Chad: one cVDPV2 case and no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples
  • Germany: eight cVDPV2 positive environmental samples
  • Israel: six positive cVDPV1 positive environmental samples. The Ministry of Health notified WHO of a confirmed cVDPV1 outbreak on August 4th.
  • Nigeria: one cVDPV2 case and no cVDPV2-positive environmental samples

  • We’ve reduced global polio cases by more than 99% since the late 1980s
  • We’ve reduced the number of endemic polio countries from over 200 to only 2
  • Our donations to ending polio will be matched 2-to-1 by The Gates Foundation

  • Our fundraising and donations can reduce the shortfall in GPEI funding
